On Wednesday, March 26, 2023, a major reform package to combat antibiotic resistance was adopted in Brussels. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports: “With its legislative package presented on Wednesday, the EU wants to tackle the problem of antibiotic resistance and ensure the supply of expensive drugs in the poorer parts of Europe. It wants to create new incentives to develop more drugs for rare diseases, approve medicines more quickly and avoid supply bottlenecks.”
The legislation was preceded by lengthy negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry and member states. The agreement included economic incentives for the development of new antibiotics, shortened approval procedures and new application guidelines to reduce incorrectly or unnecessarily used antibiotics.
